HB 476 http://leg.mt.gov/bills/2017/billhtml/HB0476.htm

A BILL FOR AN ACT ENTITLED: "AN ACT REVISING LAWS CONCERNING THE SUPERVISION OF MEDICAL ASSISTANTS; PROVIDING FOR PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT SUPERVISION OF MEDICAL ASSISTANTS; EXPANDING RULEMAKING AUTHORITY; AND AMENDING SECTIONS 37-3-102 AND 37-3-104, MCA."

Bill Summary
HB     provides for physician assistant supervision of medical assistants.

Under current law, a Medical Assistants (MA) can work in independent clinic setting under the supervision of a Physician or Podiatrist.
This bill will provide the authority for Physician Assistants (PA) to supervise Medical Assistants in this clinic setting.
The omission of Physician Assistants from the legal statues regarding the supervision of MAs has long been referred to as an ‘oversight.’
The Physician Assistant (PA) and Medical Assistant (MA) professional relationship is a standard in the modern team-based health care model.
PAs and MAs are comfortable working together and understand the abilities and limitations of each other’s profession. Both parties are currently comfortable with the supervision and delegation duties within the clinical setting.
MAs help increase the efficiency of care delivered by PAs and, thus, increase patient access to healthcare.
It is the formal position of the Montana Association of Physician Assistants (MTAPA) that the statue be updated to include PAs.
